Autumn Takes

The new semester has begun.
Juggling between teaching and research is disastrous.
My cat is getting old.
The humble pool in the courtyard is drained, and a rug of fallen leaves is covering its empty belly.
Autumn is here and I am not ready for it!

It’s Your Lifeblood That They Want to Rob- after Joe Hill: The Preacher and the Slave

Smooth-tongued trainers come out every fall
To push adjunct improvement for all
But when asked for a job guarantee
They stare startled and say “don’t ask me.”

Chorus:
You will work when we say
At all times of the night and the day
But don’t count on the job
It’s your lifeblood that we want to rob.

All the districts get by with less pay
Now with tenure about done away
And our classes are all standardized
With most teaching today ‘corpratized

Chorus:
You will work when we say
At all times of the night and the day
But don’t count on the job
It’s your lifeblood that we want to rob.

Bold reformers and ‘ Charters appear
On the ‘Cables they grin ear to ear
As consultants absorb all the cash
While reducing our classrooms to trash

Chorus:
You will work when we say
At all times of the night and the day
But don’t count on the job
It’s your lifeblood that we want to rob.

When we sign up for unions to fight
For ourselves and our students so bright
State houses and courts slap us down
To make each of us feel all alone

You will work when we say
At all times of the night and the day
But don’t count on the job
It’s your lifeblood that we want to rob.

Adjuncts all , gather ‘round, think of this
If we just called in sick they would miss
Their twelfth-day report- have no doubt
They’d call it ‘illegal walkout’

Final Chorus

Then we would say (we would say) to their face (to their face)
Give us pay (Give us pay) and our guaranteed jobs(and our place)
Or we’ll sit (or we’ll sit) in our classrooms all day (and all night!)
To win back our lost pride with more pay (it’s our right!)
